Many of us are familiar with the health benefits of yogurt, but we seldom make the most of this very versatile food. Yes, by all means, you can eat it with breakfast and enjoy it that way, but you can use it in many other ways as well. When I do my supermarket shop, I look at the types of yogurt people are buying. Most of them buy the flavored yogurts, but the interest seems to stop there, Sadly, most of the time the natural unsweetened yogurts are on a special offer as they have never been bought, and the yummy Greek yogurts also go unsold. It is time we open our eyes to the many great ways we can use yogurt in our cooking.
All yogurts do normally have some sort of probiotic value. The more probiotics we can add to our diet, the better and there many clever ways to do this. Did you know that you can even use fruit yogurt to add to your cakes? Some yogurt can be quite low in sugar and have a high fruit content. This makes them a bit sweeter and even healthier. One way to make the most of the fruity yogurt is to add it to your cake baking.
In this way, you can remove some of the sugar and perhaps get a few more health benefits from eating your cake. It is very simple to add yogurt to your cake. All you need to do is to reduce some of the liquids such as milk or water and replace them with yogurt. This is a very simple way to make a sponge cake which tastes of raspberries. As a matter of fact, you may even be able to reduce some of the fat content of your cake.
Natural yogurt probably has a few more probiotic cultures, and you will find that it is great to cook with in a lot of recipes. Of course, it is great with curry spices, but did you know that a few spoonfuls can lift your Stroganoff sauce. Simply pull the pan off the heat and add a couple of spoonfuls. It will give the sauce a slightly sour note, but it is certainly healthier than cream.
I love Greek yogurt myself, and I use it to make fresh salad dressings during the summer. Always try to use some honey as a base, but once you start to experiment, you will realize that Greek yogurt tastes great with mustard and many other spices.
You can even use Greek yogurt as the basis for a dipping sauce, and it can even be added to hot tomato salsas to cool them down a bit.
Cooking and eating healthily does not have to be difficult. Adding the health benefits of yogurt to your food is both fun, and as it isn’t expensive, it can be fun to experiment a little bit. You will soon discover that there are many great ways to enjoy yogurt, and once you have become a yogurt addict, you may even be tempted to throw out the mayonnaise.
